MarquetteHoops.com takes a look at the 6'3 guard.

One of the fast rising prospects in the class of 2009 is DJ Richardson, a shooting guard out of Peoria Central High School in Peoria, IL. Richardson's stock had been rising all summer, and when the AAU season came to a close Richardson had accumulated several scholarship offers from colleges all over the country.

With so many schools showing various degrees of interest, DJ admits that it is hard to remember them all. "There are a lot of schools sending me mail, but I would have to say that Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Marquette, Illinois, Indiana and Nebraska are the schools that have been on me the hardest. I am sure there are more, but those are the ones that I can think of right now."

Richardson says that the strongest parts of his game right now are his defense, his ability to score and his aggressiveness in driving to the hoop. Just as quickly as he lists his strengths, he says that there is a lot of work to do. "I need to work on my jumpshot. I also see myself as a combo guard in college. I am more of a two guard now, but I will need to play some point at the next level so I need to work on my ball handling. I need to become a more complete guard."

Just having started his junior year in high school, DJ doesn't see himself narrowing down his list of schools anytime soon, but he does know what he is looking for. "I want to play for a team that really pushes the ball up the court. I want to play on a team that really gets it and goes, but not necessarily a run and gun situation, but in a transition type of offense."

The 6'3 guard not only knows what style of play he is looking for in a team, but he knows what he wants in a coach too. "I want to play for a coach that really knows how to coach guards, someone who has put guards in the NBA. Not that the NBA is the focus, but I want someone who will really develop me into a complete guard."

DJ has been playing AAU ball for the Illinois Stars, but will he wait until the next AAU season to decide where he will be playing at the next level? "I won't make a decision until 2008, probably after my high school season. Right now I just want to focus in on my grades, grades and basketball."

From the answers given above, we can say that we know quite a bit about DJ Richardson, so how about a little fun with a Q & A?

IWB: Who is your favorite NBA team?

DJ: Miami Heat

IWB: Favorite NBA player?
DJ: Dwyane Wade is number 1, Kobe probably #2. I really like Kobe.

IWB: Who is the most famous basketball player to ever come out of Peoria?
DJ: Shaun Livingston

IWB: No love for my boy Curly "Boo" Johnson? The ‘World's Greatest Dribbler' started at point guard for the Harlem Globetrotters for 17 years!
DJ: Yeah, I'll go with him, I forgot about him.

IWB: I went to school with him. He went to Loras College

DJ: He went to the same Middle School that I went to.

IWB: You got me there.

IWB: Who is the best player you ever played against?

DJ: Overall or AAU?

IWB: Both

DJ: Overall would be Shaun Livingston, AAU would be Korie Lucious.

IWB: Korie Lucious?
DJ: Yeah, Korie Lucious

IWB: What is your favorite NFL team?
DJ: Atlanta Falcons

IWB: Favorite NFL player?
DJ: Michael Vick. Well, it was until all the stuff about him came out, now I'll have to find someone else.

IWB: Favorite pro baseball team?
DJ: No thanks.

IWB: What is your best sport outside of basketball?
DJ: I really only play basketball.

IWB: Then what are your favorite sports to watch other than basketball?
DJ: On TV or in person?
IWB: Both

DJ: I like going to football games, like high school games. When it comes to football, I like to see the games in person. I like to see it with my own eyes. When it comes to TV, believe it or not I like watching gymnastics on TV. It is amazing the way they can do flips the way they do. I don't really want to go see it in person, but I do like watching it on TV.

IWB: To close it out, what is one thing that people wouldn't know about you?

DJ: Probably my personality. People probably don't realize how good of a person I am. That is something that I am proud of.

So there you have it – taking a look at DJ Richardson. There is a lot to be said about this young man, as a person and as a basketball player. To date I have read different views and opinions of his game, but much like his thoughts on watching football, I would much rather see him play in person, with my own eyes.
