Crunching the Numbers - Watching the Records

The 2007-2008 basketball season has yet to begin, but when it is done, where might current MU players stand in the Marquette record books? "MU Viking" did some number crunching and shows us where some of the Golden Eagles might stand when the season is done.....

Some career stats to watch this year...

Dominic James
* James has 979 career points already. He is about to become the 38th player to reach 1000 points in his career. He will become the 24th player to reach the 1000 point plateau in three seasons or less. Projecting out another season similar to the first two, James would sit at about 13th or 14th place (passing either Eford or Hutchins or both).

* James has 334 career assists through two sesasons. Sam Worthen sits in 10th place all-time with 384 career assists. If James merely matches his assist production from the last two years (167 each year), he will be only the fourth player ever to have 500 assists at MU (Miller, Diener and Hutchins being the other three).

* James has 114 career steals so far. D-Wade sits in 10th place with 150 career steals. James is obviously behind McNeal as well, but if he matches his first two seasons and finishes behind McNeal for career steals, he should be in about 8th place, just behind Tony Miller after this season.

Jerel McNeal
* McNeal has 769 career points through two seasons. He should become the 39th MU player to ever score 1000 and the 25th player to reach the 1000 point plateau in three seasons or less. Projecting out another season similar to the first two, Jerel would finish the season at about #29 overall, just behind Robb Logterman. Obviously, Jerel's injuries are not taken into account in all this.

* McNeal has 140 career steals. He is 10 away from tying D-Wade in 10th place. If he matches his last year's averages, he will finish the season in third place all-time, trailing only Michael Wilson and Mandy Johnson.

Wesley Matthews
* Matthews has 637 career points thus far. Obviously, projecting out his average from the last two years, he will fall short of 1000 career points this year. However, you also have to keep in mind that Wes only scored 207 his freshman year because of injury. Therefore, if healthy and producing similar to his sophomore production, he should also pass the 1000 point mark this year. If this happens, it will mark the first time in Marquette history that three players in the same class scored 1000 points before the end of their junior year. (The 1994 graduating class of Key, McIlvaine and Logterman saw Key score 1000 by the end of his junior year, but McIlvaine and Logterman passed 1000 their senior seasons.)

Ousmane Barro
* Ooze has 59 career blocked shots to this point. He is 20 behind #10 all-time in blocks, Dwyane Wade. Projecting out a season similar to his junior season in which he had 35 blocks, Ooze would finish #7 all-time in MU history (behind McIlvaine, McCaskill, Abraham, Wilson, Merritt and Downing).

* Ooze currently has 383 career rebounds. He should become the 39th player to reach 500 rebounds in his career. Putting Ooze at the same number of rebounds he had last year, Ooze would finish 19th all-time behind Maurice Lucas (and would be one of only 21 to reach 600 rebounds).

Dan Fitzgerald
* Fitz has 82 career 3PM at Marquette. Unfortunately, he will not break the top 10 all-time at MU because of his first year at Tulane (23 3PM) won't count toward his MU total.
