Marquette shot 16 for 25 from the free throw line and committed 15 turnovers. MU was making a mini run at the end of the first half to cut the deficit to six points but MU coach Buzz Williams was called for a technical foul and Hilliard scored the last 5 pts of the half to stretch the Nova lead to 11 at the half.
Here is a transcript from the abbreviated post-game show with Buzz Williams and Steve True/Jim Mac on ESPN 540am.
[Buzz Williams questions a call vs Villanova]
[Homer: Now Xav is 10-6…MU falls to 9-7…Coach what happened...were they were too good…?]
Buzz:"First thing that comes to my mind is 'not tough enough'…they beat us to too many 50/50 balls…we turned the ball over too much had 15 TOs...we had 7 the other night [Gtown]but they had 14 TOs…[looking at the box score]you could say that we did not shoot the ball…we attempted more FTs than we did…we were beat on the off glass…they had one more than we did…they were playing for a league championship…we were still trying to play in the post season……
We did not have the energy and fight that we needed from start to finish..gaps and times when we did but not all of the time…at times we did….
[Mac:Deonte Burton played well]
[#4 Todd Mayo had 11 pts]
Buzz:"I thought he played really well…offensively he was really good…and I thought he was fine defensively too…he gave us a spark for sure.
[Homer: What did they do to take you out of the game…was it their press?]
Buzz: "That is how they play 3/ 4ths court pressure…they did not do it at all vs us in Milw…they had played 4 or 5 BE games coming to Milw did it every possession…and since Milw …they did it every time[today]…we were prepared for it…once you break it… Does it keep you out of rhythm…? ….we had 2 TO…vs pressure, I should have called TO on one of them…Steve in the back court...Trying to get to the media [4 more seconds]… and it gets kind disjointed once you beat the pressure and try to flow into your offense. [ a power issue cut off Homer's interview and it ended the post game show...but MU was also trying to beat the snow storm that was going to bury Philadelphia this afternoon.]
