Taylor Picks Up Offer From Golden Eagles

Steve Taylor, a 6'8 forward from Chicago Simeon, visited Marquette this week and left Milwaukee with a scholarship offer from Golden Eagles' head coach Buzz Williams

Steve Taylor of Chicago Simeon came away from an unofficial trip to Marquette University this week highly impressed with several aspects of the Golden Eagles' basketball program as well as the school itself.

A 6-foot-8, 212-pound forward ranked No. 68 among the nation's prospects in the class of 2012 by Scout.com, Taylor received a scholarship offer from Marquette coach Buzz Williams during his visit and lists the Big East Conference program among his early favorites.

"I have offers from a number of schools, including Marquette, Memphis, Northwestern, DePaul, Ohio and Xavier," Taylor said. "It's too early to tell in terms of where I'll end up, but I did like everything about Marquette."

Taylor averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds per game as a junior while leading Simeon to the Illinois High School Association Class 4A state championship and a 30-2 record. In Simeon's 48-39 victory over Gurnee Warren in the state-title game, Taylor finished with 8 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and 3 steals.

On the travel-team circuit this spring, Taylor has played well for the Mac Irvin Fire squad that finished 11-4 in the prestigious NIKE Elite Youth Basketball League (NEYBL). He turned in games of 14 points and 12 rebounds, 15 points and 13 rebounds and 14 points and 14 rebounds in the NEYBL and finished in double-scoring figures in all but three games.

A solid perimeter shooter who can stretch defenses, Taylor is ranked No. 1 in Illinois in the class of 2012 and figures to receive plenty of additional recruiting attention once the travel-team scene heats up again in July.

"I'm not sure when I'll make my decision," he said. "Probably in the fall after the AAU season is finished."

The four-star prospect says his trip to Marquette went well and the Golden Eagles' style of play, plus the fact they compete in the Big East Conference, are definite pluses.

"I don't really care which conference I play in for college, but I do think the Big East is the best conference in the country," Taylor said. "I also like Marquette's ability to get up-and-down the floor. I like that style.

"I liked everything about my visit to Marquette. Tthe support they give to their players is impressive. I like the academic people I met, I like the school, I like the campus and I really like the trainer.

"The players were great as well. I liked everything about coach Buzz Williams. It was a very good visit."
